Is the micro site the new online marketing beast?

This is a question that initially split opinion; seasoned online marketing aficionados decried the thought. The traditional affiliate marketing  system has long been viewed as a productive, though sometimes expensive way of developing a broader client base. Now, as ever, the evolution continues, the first few waves and generation’s of online marketing strategy are not so much seeing a slump, more so reaching what some still perceive to be a natural plateau. Somewhere, in the deep depths of internet marketing lurks a new beast, younger, smarter, stronger and more capable. The micro-site is starting to arrive as the new kid on the block, the heir to the throne –  but what is the micro site and what does it do?

As a concept you would be forgiven for thinking that the term micro-site relates to the size of the site, strangely not, the name does not really do it justice. The micro-site is built on a cross over next generation platform, it fuses online cms, blogging, mobile content and social media outreach in an incredible way. Custom built websites designed to ride the top of the search engine rankings, hurtle new content and posts out to the whole world in a real time speed that leaves older technology and website platforms panting in the distance.

Visually stunning and packed with ‘out of the box’ technology that allows end users of the software to build outstanding and next generation websites in minutes, is it any wonder the micro site is already the weapon of choice for a new breed of online marketing experts. Imagine launching a site and seeing it hit the 1st page of Google in a matter of days? Imagine being able to run multi-level branding options from one central point with practically no cost actual, the micro site will relentlessly work itself and deliver results, it has been developed to dominate online and non voice marketing for this generation.

If you are an online business that wants to make money today and not dream about making money tomorrow then now is the time to switch from the rapidly stalling affiliate model and put your business in front of the pack. The benefits are immense from reduced advertising spend, greater in-house control, the ability to launch and modify truly effective online marketing campaigns and increase your bottom line significantly.

To find out more contact MSG MEDIA today and we will talk you through the how you can take advantage of the new online marketing beast that is reshaping the internet as we know it.0161-367-9897

Websites starting to become all style and no substance – Jakob Nielsen

He warned that the rush to make webpages more dynamic often meant users were badly served.

He said sites peppered with personalisation tools were in danger of resembling the “glossy but useless” sites at the height of the dotcom boom.

Research into website use shows that sites were better off getting the basics right, said Mr Nielsen.

User tests

Describing Web 2.0 as the “latest fashion”, Mr Nielsen said many sites paying attention to it were neglecting some of the principles of good design and usability established over the last decade.

Good practices include making a site easy to use, good search tools, the use of text free of jargon, usability testing and a consideration of design even before the first line of code is written.

Sadly, said Mr Nielsen, the rush to embrace Web 2.0 technology meant that many firms were turning their back on the basics.

“They should get the basics right first,” he said. “Sadly most websites do not have those primary things right.”

There was a risk, he said, of a return to the dotcom boom days when many sites, such as Boo.com, looked great but were terrible to use.

“That was just bad,” he said. “The idea of community, user generated content and more dynamic web pages are not inherently bad in the same way, they should be secondary to the primary things sites should get right.”

“The main criticism or problem is that I do not think these things are as useful as the primary things,” he said.

Well-established patterns of user involvement with sites also led Mr Nielsen to question the sense of adopting Web 2.0 technologies.

By definition, said Mr Nielsen, only a small number of users are likely to make significant use of all the tools a site provides.

While some sites with particular demographics, such as MySpace, Facebook and Bebo, have large involved communities of users that will not hold true for all sites, he said.

“Most people just want to get in, get it and get out,” said Mr Nielsen. “For them the web is not a goal in itself. It is a tool.”

Web firms rushing to serve the small, committed minority might find they make a site far less useful to the vast majority who come to a site for a specific purpose.

Google to use Place Pages to influence local search results

Last month, Google annouced that it is now using Rich Snippets for local search. Webmasters with pages that in some way pertain to real world places, can utilize these to reference those places and optimize for local search results.

As you may know, Google Place Pages contain links to reviews for businesses, and an interesting nugget in Google’s Rich Snippets for Local Search FAQ that pertains to this is”How will Google treat businesses posting testimonials with review mark up on their own site? Will these be treated as a review by the Place Page?”

Google’s answer to this is, “Testimonials will be treated as business reviews on the Place Page.”

So, naturally, there are questions about people putting up fake testimonials to make their businesses look better than the real public perception would dictate.

People have been putting testimonials on their sites for years, and really there’s no way for consumers to tell how real they are, so that’s not really different. However, when these are put on Google’s Place Pages, a place where many, many people will see as they simply search for local business listings, they could be a little more persuasive.

Bing to produce search results based on Facebook friends like responses.

Bing will soon allow searchers to see results generated by their Facebook friends’ use of the “like” button on the social network, Microsoft announced today.

Microsoft’s Qi Lu, president of Microsoft Online Services, and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a press conference at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley headquarters to announce an extension of a long-running partnership between the two companies to feature Facebook profiles and a “liked by your friends” section that takes advantage of the way that Web publishers have implemented Facebook’s “like” button on their sites.

Microsoft will start rolling out the features later today, said Bing head Yusuf Mehdi. Bing users will see a little pop-up window in the upper right-hand corner of their screens that asks them if they want to link their Bing accounts and their Facebook accounts. If you decline the offer, your Facebook profile and likes will not be shown on Bing, Mehdi said, and you can also delete Bing from your Facebook applications if you decide later to exclude your data.

One aspect of the new integration will allow Bing searchers to see when their Facebook friends have hit a like button on a Web page. Mehdi demonstrated how someone searching for information on a car could see the regular lists of results with an additional module entitled “liked by your Facebook friends,” which will feature links to those pages with the profile photos of your Facebook friends who have chosen to share that info with Bing.

Zuckerberg and Mehdi confirmed that Bing is not sending search data back to Facebook, meaning that your Facebook friends won’t know what you’re searching for on Bing.
